Because sweat and body oil build up in the fibre and a general wash does not shift them. The towel smells fine cold and dry, then smells again once it is warm and damp — which a member notices before you do.

• We count a real week in Brasted before quoting — including the evening peak, which is where every estimate falls over.

We count at peak, because that is the only hour the count has to survive. Every other hour looks fine on any count, which is why averages keep passing and racks keep emptying.
