What goes wrong

An empty rack at six is the Thaxted complaint you hear about

Clubs in Thaxted rarely leave a supplier over price. They leave after a run of evenings where the rack was empty at peak, or a batch came back smelling of damp.

  • Running out at the evening peak

Between five and seven the rack empties faster than the rest of the day combined. An average hides that completely, which is why average-based counts fail at peak.

  • Towels that come back smelling

Sweat and body oil build up in the fibre and a general wash does not shift them. The towel smells clean cold, then smells again once it is warm and damp — which a member notices before you do.

  • Stock that never quite balances

Loss is normal and predictable. Pretending otherwise is what turns a towel account into a reconciliation exercise nobody wins.

How it works

Four steps to a Thaxted club on the round

Most of the work happens before the first collection. Get the peak-hour count right and the towel rack stops being something the duty manager thinks about.

Serving CM6 Since 2009
  1. The count

We count at peak because that is the only hour the par level has to survive. Every other hour looks fine on any count.

    An hour, at peak

  2. The round

Thaxted sits 38.3 miles out on the CM6 round, so the drop is timed against your busiest hours rather than the traffic.

    CM6 · 7 days

  3. The switch

You are never between suppliers, and no evening is covered by rationing towels.

    No gap in service

  4. The account

The same person handles Thaxted every week, which is why a change to your par count does not need explaining twice.

    One name, not a queue

Running more than one club around Uttlesford? The same account manager covers all of them, on staggered days so no site is left short.

How it is processed

Thaxted towels are not subcontracted

There are two buildings between your towels and ours, and we own both. Thaxted collections run 38.3 miles to our Wembley plant. Nothing is passed to a third party in between.

Softener is the usual culprit behind a towel that stops absorbing: it coats the fibre. Gym stock runs without it, which is why ours keeps drying rather than smearing.

A Thaxted switch nobody on the floor notices

The reason Thaxted operators put up with a supplier they have stopped rating is timing: there is no good week to gamble on towels. That is a scheduling problem, not a reason to stay.

  1. Before you commit

We count your peak, not your average

An hour on site at the time it actually matters. Towel demand stacks into two hours, and an average hides exactly that.

  2. The handover

Stock lands before the old supplier stops

You are never between suppliers. New stock is on the shelf before the last collection of the old contract.

  3. After

Par counts adjust once we have seen a month

Month one is a measurement. From month two the par count reflects your real peak and your real shrinkage rather than an opening guess.

Nothing here needs you to be out of contract first — the count and the quote cost nothing.

The area

Why Thaxted is collected the way it is

A quintessentially English town known for its majestic church, guildhall, and morris dancing. Unique to Thaxted.

Clubs here sit on the CM6 round, and the hour that matters is the evening peak rather than the morning — Thaxted is close enough that a disrupted run is a second trip that day.

Thaxted questions, answered

Which round covers Thaxted?

Yes — Thaxted sits on the CM6 round, 7 days, 38.3 miles from our Wembley plant.

  • Shared with Great Dunmow, Saffron Walden and Stansted Mountfitchet — adding you changes the schedule, not the route.
  • Collections here run to scheduled days, agreed when the account opens, because of that distance.
  • Multi-site operators run on staggered days, so no club is left short while another is being collected from.
Can we keep our own branded stock in Thaxted?

Both, and mixed accounts are normal. One collection covers whichever way each line is set up.

  • Hire — we own the stock, replace what wears out and carry the cost of a towel that greys in month two.
  • Wash-only — your own branded stock comes back to you, the same items, not pooled.
  • Most clubs split it — hired gym towels where nobody reads a label, own-branded robes in the spa where the branding is the point.
  • You can move a line between the two later — clubs often start on hire and move the spa side across once branding is settled.
Do you do treatment room linen too?

Yes, and they are genuinely different jobs on the same account. A gym floor wants volume and absorbency; a spa wants handle and appearance.

  • Robes are laundered to keep their handle — which is a different process from turning round sweat towels at volume.
  • Bath mats run on a heavier classification — because wet-area linen takes a different kind of soil.
  • One collection, one invoice — the split is in the classification, not in the account.
  • Hotel spas are a normal account — and the hotel laundry page covers how the rooms side is priced.
What is the commitment for an Thaxted account?

No long-term tie-in and no exit fee. We would rather keep you on the service than on the paperwork.

  • Terms flex with seasonal demand — Thaxted in January and Thaxted in August are different clubs, and the account should say so.
  • Nothing needs you to be out of your current contract first — we will count your peak while you are still under someone else.
  • Stock arrives before the old supplier is stood down — you are never between suppliers.
  • If it is not working, say so — the fix is usually a number on the sheet rather than a new contract.
Why do our towels stop absorbing?

Because the wash was wrong, not because the towel is finished. Cold it is fine; warm and damp it is not, and that is after it has reached a member.

  • Gym towelling runs on its own classification — Thaxted towels are classified for the soil they actually carry.
  • Oil needs a different temperature from sweat — softener is the usual culprit: it smells pleasant and stops the towel drying anything.
  • Towels that stop absorbing are usually over-softened, not worn out — which means you are replacing stock that had life left in it.
  • Every load is temperature logged — so there is a record behind the classification rather than an assurance.
How is stock reconciled on a Thaxted account?

Towels walk. The question is whether the account expects it.

  • Expected loss is built into the par count at setup — so the rack does not empty because the maths assumed nothing walked.
  • You get the actual numbers each cycle — not a statement that only makes sense to us.
  • A sudden jump in loss is worth knowing about — a step change in shrinkage is information, not an invoice line.
  • On hire, fair wear is our cost — not a charge back to you.
What does a towel account cost in Thaxted?

Priced on your peak and your member numbers, not off a rate card. Two clubs with the same membership can differ twofold in towel usage depending on the floor.

  • We count a real week in Thaxted before quoting — rather than pricing off your last invoice.
  • The count includes January — which is the one spike everybody knows is coming and most quotes ignore.
  • No minimum order — size barely moves the per-item price.
  • The count and the quote cost nothing — and commit you to nothing.
How do you stop us running out at peak?

We count at peak, because that is the only hour the count has to survive. Towel demand does not spread evenly across opening hours — it stacks, and an average hides exactly that.

  • We count on site at the time it matters — the invoice records what you were sold, not what the rack needed.
  • A Monday evening and a Sunday morning are different businesses — and a single number that averages them fails on the busier one.
  • January is planned in — the one spike everyone knows is coming is the one worth building into the count.
  • If you run short twice, the count is wrong — we reset it against real usage rather than the opening estimate.

Rewashing Thaxted linen is the real environmental cost

Most of the environmental cost of gym towelling is rewashing and replacing it. Getting the classification right the first time does more than any claim on a van.

  • One vehicle covers CM6, so adding Thaxted adds a stop rather than a journey.
  • Most towels retired early are over-softened rather than worn out.
  • Hire stock is rotated through its full life rather than binned when it greys.
  • Over 80% of our central London fleet is fully electric.
