What goes wrong

Three things that cost Penn clubs a supplier

Clubs in Penn rarely leave a supplier over price. They leave after a run of evenings where the rack was empty at peak, or a batch came back smelling of damp.

  • Running out at the evening peak

Towel demand stacks into roughly two hours rather than spreading across opening. A par count set on a daily average leaves the Penn rack empty exactly when the floor is busiest.

  • Towels that come back smelling

A towel can pass inspection dry and fail it in use. Oil left in the fibre only announces itself once the towel warms up, which is after it has reached a member.

  • Stock that never quite balances

Towels walk. Every Penn club loses some, and an account that does not plan for shrinkage turns into a monthly argument about counts.

How it works

Four steps to a Penn club on the round

Most of the work happens before the first collection. Get the peak-hour count right and the towel rack stops being something the duty manager thinks about.

Serving HP9 Since 2009
  1. The count

We count against your peak rather than your average — a Monday evening and a Sunday morning in Penn are different businesses, and the par level has to survive both.

    An hour, at peak

  2. The round

Penn sits 16.3 miles out on the HP9 round, so the drop is timed against your busiest hours rather than the traffic.

    HP9 · 7 days

  3. The switch

You are never between suppliers, and no evening is covered by rationing towels.

    No gap in service

  4. The account

The same person handles Penn every week, which is why a change to your par count does not need explaining twice.

    One name, not a queue

Running more than one club around Buckinghamshire? The same account manager covers all of them, on staggered days so no site is left short.

How it is processed

No third party touches Penn gym towelling

There are two buildings between your towels and ours, and we own both. Penn collections run 16.3 miles to our Wembley plant. Nothing is passed to a third party in between.

Gym towelling is its own classification. Sweat and body oil need a different wash to bed linen or table linen — get it wrong and the towel smells clean until it warms up.

Switching supplier in Penn without an empty rack

The reason Penn operators put up with a supplier they have stopped rating is timing: there is no good week to gamble on towels. That is a scheduling problem, not a reason to stay.

  1. Before you commit

We count your peak, not your average

We count the Penn floor between five and seven rather than take a number off your last invoice — the invoice records what you were sold, not what the rack needed.

  2. The handover

Stock lands before the old supplier stops

The two contracts overlap on purpose, so no Penn evening is covered by rationing what is left on the rack.

  3. After

Par counts adjust once we have seen a month

First counts are an estimate. After four weeks we set them against what you actually used, including what walked out of the door.

Nothing here needs you to be out of contract first — the count and the quote cost nothing.

The area

Penn, specifically

An ultra-wealthy hilltop village with a historic core and expansive, prestigious common land. Unique to Penn.

What makes Penn its own job is when the demand lands. Towel volume stacks into two hours, so the round is timed against that rather than against the distance.

Penn towel service — the questions we get most

Can you reach Penn 7 days?

Yes — Penn sits on the HP9 round, 7 days, 16.3 miles from our Wembley plant.

  • Shared with Beaconsfield, Tylers Green and Seer Green — one van, one run, which is what keeps a single studio sensible to price.
  • The driver knows the streets around Beaconsfield — which matters when the drop has to land before the evening rush.
  • A missed window here is picked up on the next round rather than the next week, which is what 16.3 miles buys you.
  • 2 clubs and spas around HP9 are already on this round — which is why the timings suit an evening peak rather than a hotel check-out.
Is there a price list for towel hire?

There is no honest price list for towel work. Towel volume depends on member numbers and how hard the floor turns over, so a published list would be wrong for most clubs.

  • We count a real week in Penn before quoting — rather than pricing off your last invoice.
  • The count includes January — which is the one spike everybody knows is coming and most quotes ignore.
  • No minimum order — a small Penn studio pays the same per towel as a club ten times the size.
  • The count and the quote cost nothing — and commit you to nothing.
How is the par count set for a Penn club?

We count at peak, because that is the only hour the count has to survive. A Penn floor gets through more between five and seven than across the rest of the day combined.

  • We count on site at the time it matters — not from a figure on your last invoice.
  • A Monday evening and a Sunday morning are different businesses — the par level has to survive both, so it is set against the worse of the two.
  • January is planned in — the one spike everyone knows is coming is the one worth building into the count.
  • If you run short twice, the count is wrong — a second shortage is a counting error, not bad luck.
What is the difference between hire and wash-only in HP9?

Both, and mixed accounts are normal. Plenty of Penn clubs run half and half.

  • Hire — stock, replacement and shrinkage planning are ours; you never reorder.
  • Wash-only — your own branded stock comes back to you, the same items, not pooled.
  • Most clubs split it — the logo matters on a robe, rarely on a sweat towel.
  • You can move a line between the two later — it is a change to the sheet, not a new agreement.
Can wet-area mats go on the same collection?

Yes, and they are genuinely different jobs on the same account. Volume on one side of the building, finish on the other.

  • Robes are laundered to keep their handle — which is a different process from turning round sweat towels at volume.
  • Bath mats run on a heavier classification — and they are counted separately for the same reason.
  • One collection, one invoice — no second supplier for the spa side.
  • Hotel spas are a normal account — the bed linen side can go on the same round.
Are we tied into a long contract?

No long-term tie-in and no exit fee. Nothing in the agreement is designed to make leaving awkward.

  • Terms flex with seasonal demand — you are not held to a peak figure through a quiet quarter.
  • Nothing needs you to be out of your current contract first — there is no cost to finding out.
  • Stock arrives before the old supplier is stood down — the two overlap by design.
  • If it is not working, say so — most problems are a wrong par count or a wrong delivery window, and both are fixable without changing supplier.
Why do towels smell clean but go damp-smelling later?

It is oil left in the fibre, not the towel being old. The towel smells fine cold and dry, then smells again once it is warm and damp — which a member notices before you do.

  • Gym towelling runs on its own classification — the programme is chosen for body oil rather than inherited from whatever ran before.
  • Oil needs a different temperature from sweat — and softener makes it worse by coating the fibre, which is why we do not use it on gym stock.
  • Towels that stop absorbing are usually over-softened, not worn out — and the fix costs nothing but a change of classification.
  • Every load is temperature logged — which matters if you are ever asked to show how stock is handled.
How do you handle shrinkage?

Every Penn club loses towels, and an account that pretends otherwise turns into a monthly argument about counts.

  • Expected loss is built into the par count at setup — so the rack does not empty because the maths assumed nothing walked.
  • You get the actual numbers each cycle — not a statement that only makes sense to us.
  • A sudden jump in loss is worth knowing about — a step change in shrinkage is information, not an invoice line.
  • On hire, fair wear is our cost — greying and thinning are ours to replace.

Getting it right first time in Penn

Most of the environmental cost of gym towelling is rewashing and replacing it. Getting the classification right the first time does more than any claim on a van.

  • The HP9 round is a shared journey rather than a separate trip to Penn.
  • Towelling washed without softener keeps absorbing, so it is replaced on wear rather than on feel.
  • Hire stock is rotated through its full life rather than binned when it greys.
  • More than 80% of the fleet running into Buckinghamshire is fully electric.
