What a bedding order can hold

Bedding laundry in the UAE reaches well past the mattress: quilts, pillows, bath towels, loose sofa covers and the tablecloth from last weekend all have their own price per piece. Tap any tile for how it's handled and the one thing to check before it goes in the bag.

Duvets of every size

A duvet is given a drum of its own so the filling can spread, then a slow dry until it springs back light. A balcony rail in the sun bakes the shell and leaves the centre wet, which is why a home-dried quilt can smell off a week later.

Unbutton the cover and send it as a separate piece. Left on, it traps water against the filling and doubles the drying time.

Stitched comforters

Comforter cleaning follows the duvet's route, but the stitching gets a closer look. The quilted squares hold the fill in separate pockets, and each pocket dries at its own pace, so we feel along the rows before calling it finished.

Run your hand along the lines of stitching while it's still on the bed. If fibre is poking out of a split, a quick photo in the chat lets us decide how to wash it.

Covers for duvets and comforters

The cover takes the night sweat, body lotion and after-sun before any of it reaches the fill. It is washed as an item in its own right and comes back folded into a neat flat square.

Turn it inside out and close every popper or zip. An open cover acts like a sack in the drum and gathers up small things such as pillowcases.

Fibre and feather pillows

Hair oil, face cream and warm nights all soak into a pillow, which is how a white one turns that tired yellow. A wash and a long tumble give back most of the loft, provided the fill still has life in it.

Fold it in half and let go. If it stays bent, the filling is spent and a wash won't revive it. Memory foam can't go in water at all.

Cases discolour well before the sheets, mostly from make-up, kohl and hair products. Each one is priced on its own.

Resist rubbing a mascara smudge with hand soap first; that can set it. Mention it in the booking and it gets looked at before the wash.

A protector catches what would otherwise sink into the mattress: sweat, a spilt karak, a toddler's bad night. It goes through with the rest of your bed linen.

Some have a plastic-feel waterproof back that cracks if dried hot. Read the label and tell us if it asks for a cool wash or no tumble.

Sheets get changed more than anything else on a bed, and in the hot months more than ever. Each is washed, dried and folded, at one price a sheet.

Give every sheet a hard shake over the floor as you strip the bed. Earring backs and hair grips like to ride along in the corners of a fitted one.

Bedspreads and throws

The top layer lies out all day, catching fine dust blown from the AC grille and whatever sand comes in on bare feet. It is washed alone, with space to turn.

Check for beads, sequins or fringing and say so when you book. Decorated edges are looked at by hand before any machine sees them.

Bath, hand and pool towels

Towel laundry is mostly about the rinse and the dry. Terry loops hang on to detergent, and leftover soap is what turns a towel scratchy, so ours get a thorough rinse and a long tumble.

Pack them away from the quilt. A wet towel sealed in a bag with bedding on a warm afternoon starts to smell within hours.

Towelling bathrobes

A robe weighs a lot more wet than a towel and the shawl collar is the last part to dry. It's washed like a towel and kept in until the collar is done too.

Slide the belt out of its loops and tuck it in the same bag. Belts are the bit that goes astray.

Cotton mats from beside the shower or the kitchen door have their own line on the list.

Flip it over before bagging. A rubber backing that has gone crumbly breaks up in the drum, so leave that one out or warn us.

Pale sofa fabric shows every oily handprint and drip of coffee. Removable covers are priced by size, regular or large, and each one is checked for marks before washing.

Snap a photo of the sofa before you unzip anything, so you know later which cover belongs on which cushion. Close every zip before it goes in the bag.
