What our UAE rug cleaners will collect

The rug that takes the traffic

Machine-made sitting room rugs go at the standard rate, AED 25 a square metre. The strip between the sofa and the TV usually wears flat and grey well before the edges do.

Shift chair and table legs off it the evening before collection. Feet marks in the pile often rise once it's groomed, though a deep dent that's years old might leave a trace.

Soft rugs beside the bed

Bare feet cross a bedside rug, not outdoor soles, but it still gathers hair, skin flakes and whatever dust the air conditioning keeps moving round the room.

These are usually machine-made and charged at the standard square-metre rate. If the latex on the back has turned brittle or powdery, send a photo before booking, because it can crumble once it's wet.

Synthetic and outdoor-style rugs

Polypropylene and polyester rugs shrug off a deep clean and dry faster than wool. They're AED 25 per square metre.

Their pile leans the way people walk, which shows up as a lighter stripe. Once clean, we brush the whole surface one way so the shade evens out.

Under the toys

Felt-tip, spilled laban, modelling clay and sandpit sand all end up in a play rug. It's priced like any rug of the same make, by the square metre.

Hand-knotted, oriental and silk · Persian rug

Persian rug cleaning, carefully

A hand-knotted Persian goes at the oriental rate of AED 45 per square metre. Before it gets wet we test the dyes, because a deep madder red or indigo can creep into an ivory ground if it isn't fast.

Is it an heirloom, very old or worn thin in a few spots? Tell us when you book and send pictures, so we can talk it over before anyone picks it up.

Hand-knotted, oriental and silk · Turkish or Afghan carpet

Other hand-knotted carpets

Turkish, Afghan, Kashmiri and other hand-knotted carpets sit on the same AED 45 rate. A pH-balanced clean brings the design forward without pulling colour out of the wool.

Can't tell if yours was knotted by hand? Turn back a corner. A pattern on the underside that's as crisp as the top is a strong hint that it was.

Silk on the floor

Real silk is the touchiest fibre we see in a rug. The wrong method leaves it flat or blotchy, and some silk dyes start moving the minute they're damp.

We take silk on, but it has no fixed rate on our list. Send the size, a few photos and what you know of its history, and we'll quote before anything is arranged.

Prayer mats, priced each · Single prayer mat

Cleaning a prayer mat

A prayer mat is AED 15 regardless of size. With five prayers a day, the nap gathers skin oil from palms and forehead, and in time a faint stale smell.

After cleaning, the pile is brushed up so it lies soft and level. Hand it over rolled, or folded gently along the crease it already has, rather than squashed into a carrier bag.

Sending several together

Each mat is counted on its own at AED 15, so five mats cost five times that. A child's smaller mat counts the same.

Long runners and big carpets · Entrance runner

Runners by the front door

The runner inside the entrance takes the sand off every pair of sandals, so it's often the grittiest piece in the house. It's measured and charged by area like any rug.

Vacuum it front and back before collection, then roll it from a short end. A long runner folded in half keeps a ridge across its backing.

Majlis and villa hall carpets

A big loose carpet in the majlis or a villa hall is simply a large rug to us. We measure it and charge per square metre, at the standard or oriental rate depending on how it's made.

Something that size weighs a lot once rolled. Have the cushions, tables and sofas moved off it before the pickup window, and for a really large one, message us first so we can plan the collection.

Offcuts laid as rugs

A spare length of carpet, bound or not, can come to us as long as it lies loose. It's charged per square metre like any rug.

Cut, unbound edges can fray a touch during cleaning, so mention them at booking and we'll tell you what to expect.

Dust that's sunk to the backing

After a dusty spell, a rug can hide a surprising amount of fine sand. Lift one corner, tap the underside and watch it fall out.

Run a vacuum over both faces at home first. The clean then deals with what's settled at the roots of the pile, out of a household vacuum's reach.

Dust, spills and stubborn marks · Karak or gahwa spill

Karak, gahwa and tea rings

Sweet milky karak and cardamom gahwa both dry to a brown ring. Dab it at once with a clean cloth and cool water. Scrubbing only pushes it outward.

Stain extraction is part of our rug cleaning, so just say where the mark is. A fresh spill usually lifts better than one that's been walked on for months.

Rice, sauce and cooking oil

The rug near the dining table catches grains of rice, curry and the odd spot of ghee. Lift anything solid and blot what's left before it dries.

Oil that's sat in the pile a long time may fade rather than vanish. We'll say honestly what we think can be done.

Mites and allergens

With windows shut and the AC on for much of the year, dust and allergens settle into a rug and stay there. A stuffy nose first thing in the morning can be the clue.

Our deep clean goes after allergens, bacteria and packed-down dust, which a vacuum alone can't pull out.
