Drapes with a sewn-in lining

The lining is often a plainer cotton than the face, and it takes the full sun all day. In a home wash the two layers pull different ways, so we pick a method both can handle.

Before bagging, pinch the lining nearest the glass. If it crumbles or feels papery, WhatsApp us a photo first.

Heavy curtains in the majlis

Majlis curtains tend to be long, heavy and often embroidered or trimmed. They also soak up bukhoor and oud smoke over the months, which is usually what people notice first.

Point out any beading or tassels when you book. Loose trims get spotted before cleaning, not after.

Velvet and its pile

Velvet bruises. Press on it or fold it hard and you get shiny stripes where the pile's been flattened. It needs gentle handling, and that's what it gets.

Roll each curtain loosely with the soft side out rather than folding it into a square. It arrives with fewer marks to deal with.

Silk at the window

Silk is beautiful at a window and has no love for the sun. A few summers of strong light and it thins, then fades in lines where it folds. It's looked over by hand before we choose a method.

Send a photo of the face that sits towards the glass. If it's starting to split, we'll tell you straight, before anyone collects it.

Blackout curtain cleaning

That coated back is what keeps a bedroom dark once the sun is up before six in summer. Treat it roughly and it cracks, so the coating is inspected before a method is chosen.

A quick test at home: hold the curtain against a bright window. Tiny points of light mean the coating is already failing, so mention it.

Plain cotton and linen

Unlined cotton and linen are lighter work, but linen will shrink if it's treated like a bath towel. The care label sets the method.

Curtains in the kids' room

Little hands grab curtains, so expect sticky patches at child height and toy dust along the bottom. Our detergents are biodegradable and hypoallergenic, which helps if a child has sensitive skin or allergies.

Check the lower half for pen or crayon and tell us where it is. A known mark is easier to deal with than a surprise.

Grease from the hob

Curtains near the cooker pick up a fine film of grease, and with the windows shut and the air conditioning on for months it has nowhere to go. Dust clings to it and the fabric greys.

Sheer curtain washing

Sheers hang right against the glass and catch the fine dust every shamal blows in. Seen up close, a white one can turn beige within months. The weave is loose and snags easily, so it gets a gentle clean.

Fold it in large, soft folds and give it its own bag, away from the heavy drapes.

Voile panels

Voile is the fine, see-through panel that softens the light without hiding the view. It's light enough to rip on a ring or hook, so check every one has come out.

Measure each panel flat. Unpleated, a voile is often wider than it looks hanging.

Lace has an open pattern that catches easily. If it's been hanging in strong sun for a long time, it may be weaker than it looks.

Drapes that reach the floor

Full-height glass means full-length drapes. Run a tape from the hook line to the bottom edge, then measure the width with the curtain laid flat.

The bottom edge drags on tiled or marble floors and collects the most dirt, so check there before bagging.

Curtains over the balcony door

The curtain by the balcony or garden door catches sand each time the door slides open, and hands push it aside all day.

Give it a good shake outside before bagging. Sand loose in the bag won't harm it, but it makes a mess at both ends.

When the track is out of reach

Some villas and penthouses, in Abu Dhabi as much as Dubai, have lounges two floors high. Getting those drapes down safely is a job of its own.

Trimmings · Tie-backs

Fabric tie-backs

Hands touch the tie-back every time the curtains are opened, so it's often the dirtiest bit of the set. Send it with the curtain it belongs to.

Tuck each tie-back inside the fold of its own curtain. That way the bedroom set and the living room set don't swap.

Soft pelmets and valances

A soft valance, the fabric strip across the top of the curtains, can come along too. It isn't on the price list, so message us for a price.
