What goes wrong

Three things that cost Alfold clubs a supplier

Almost nobody around GU6 changes towel supplier to save money. They change because the same thing went wrong three weeks running.

  • Running out at the evening peak

Towel demand stacks into roughly two hours rather than spreading across opening. A par count set on a daily average leaves the Alfold rack empty exactly when the floor is busiest.

  • Towels that come back smelling

A towel can pass inspection dry and fail it in use. Oil left in the fibre only announces itself once the towel warms up, which is after it has reached a member.

  • Stock that never quite balances

Loss is normal and predictable. Pretending otherwise is what turns a towel account into a reconciliation exercise nobody wins.

How it works

Getting a Alfold club onto the round

Most of the work happens before the first collection. Get the peak-hour count right and the towel rack stops being something the duty manager thinks about.

Serving GU6 Since 2009
  1. The count

An hour on the Alfold floor at the time it actually matters. The number that matters is the five-to-seven number, not the daily one.

    An hour, at peak

  2. The round

GU6 already has a collection day. We fit you to it and agree a time that lands before the evening rush rather than during it.

    GU6 · 7 days

  3. The switch

You are never between suppliers, and no evening is covered by rationing towels.

    No gap in service

  4. The account

The same person handles Alfold every week, which is why a change to your par count does not need explaining twice.

    One name, not a queue

Running more than one club around Waverley? The same account manager covers all of them, on staggered days so no site is left short.

How it is processed

Alfold towels are not subcontracted

There are two buildings between your towels and ours, and we own both. Alfold collections run 33.1 miles to our Wembley plant. Nothing is passed to a third party in between.

Softener is the usual culprit behind a towel that stops absorbing: it coats the fibre. Gym stock runs without it, which is why ours keeps drying rather than smearing.

Changing supplier is not the January risk Alfold clubs think

Most Alfold clubs stay with a supplier they have stopped rating, because changing one feels like a risk in the week membership is highest. It is not.

  1. Before you commit

We count your peak, not your average

We count the Alfold floor between five and seven rather than take a number off your last invoice — the invoice records what you were sold, not what the rack needed.

  2. The handover

Stock lands before the old supplier stops

The two contracts overlap on purpose, so no Alfold evening is covered by rationing what is left on the rack.

  3. After

Par counts adjust once we have seen a month

First counts are an estimate. After four weeks we set them against what you actually used, including what walked out of the door.

Nothing here needs you to be out of contract first — the count and the quote cost nothing.

The area

Alfold — what the round has to work around

A quiet, rural village on the Surrey/Sussex border with a rich canal-side history. Unique to Alfold.

Clubs here sit on the GU6 round, and the hour that matters is the evening peak rather than the morning — Alfold is close enough that a disrupted run is a second trip that day.

Asked most often about Alfold towel accounts

Which round covers Alfold?

Yes — Alfold sits on the GU6 round, 7 days, 33.1 miles from our Wembley plant.

  • Shared with Dunsfold, Cranleigh and Hascombe — the same vehicle covers them, so a club here can be added without moving anyone else.
  • Collections here run to scheduled days, agreed when the account opens, because of that distance.
  • Multi-site operators run on staggered days, so no club is left short while another is being collected from.
What is the commitment for an Alfold account?

No long-term tie-in and no exit fee. The account should hold because it works, not because leaving is expensive.

  • Terms flex with seasonal demand — you are not held to a peak figure through a quiet quarter.
  • Nothing needs you to be out of your current contract first — the count and the quote commit you to nothing.
  • Stock arrives before the old supplier is stood down — the two overlap by design.
  • If it is not working, say so — most problems are a wrong par count or a wrong delivery window, and both are fixable without changing supplier.
Why do our towels stop absorbing?

Because sweat and body oil build up in the fibre and a general wash does not shift them. The towel smells fine cold and dry, then smells again once it is warm and damp — which a member notices before you do.

  • Gym towelling runs on its own classification — Alfold towels are classified for the soil they actually carry.
  • Oil needs a different temperature from sweat — softener is the usual culprit: it smells pleasant and stops the towel drying anything.
  • Towels that stop absorbing are usually over-softened, not worn out — which means you are replacing stock that had life left in it.
  • Every load is temperature logged — and the log sits against your account, not a general plant figure.
How is stock reconciled on a Alfold account?

Shrinkage is normal and predictable. We plan for it rather than dispute it.

  • Expected loss is built into the par count at setup — rather than discovered in month three.
  • You get the actual numbers each cycle — in and out, per collection, so the figure is checkable.
  • A sudden jump in loss is worth knowing about — it usually means a change on the floor rather than a laundry problem.
  • On hire, fair wear is our cost — you pay for the service, not for towels reaching the end of their life.
What does a towel account cost in Alfold?

It is quoted, not tariffed. Two clubs with the same membership can differ twofold in towel usage depending on the floor.

  • We count a real week in Alfold before quoting — including the evening peak, which is where every estimate falls over.
  • The count includes January — which is the one spike everybody knows is coming and most quotes ignore.
  • No minimum order — so a boutique studio is an ordinary account and is priced per item like any other.
  • The count and the quote cost nothing — and commit you to nothing.
How do you stop us running out at peak?

The par count is set on your busiest two hours, not on an average day. A Alfold floor gets through more between five and seven than across the rest of the day combined.

  • We count on site at the time it matters — the invoice records what you were sold, not what the rack needed.
  • A Monday evening and a Sunday morning are different businesses — which is why the count is taken twice rather than once.
  • January is planned in — the one spike everyone knows is coming is the one worth building into the count.
  • If you run short twice, the count is wrong — we reset it against real usage rather than the opening estimate.
Can we keep our own branded stock in Alfold?

Both, and mixed accounts are normal. Plenty of Alfold clubs run half and half.

  • Hire — we own the stock, replace what wears out and carry the cost of a towel that greys in month two.
  • Wash-only — item for item, never substituted.
  • Most clubs split it — hired gym towels where nobody reads a label, own-branded robes in the spa where the branding is the point.
  • You can move a line between the two later — without reopening the account.
Do you do treatment room linen too?

Yes, and they are genuinely different jobs on the same account. Volume on one side of the building, finish on the other.

  • Robes are laundered to keep their handle — a robe that feels like a gym towel has been washed like one.
  • Bath mats run on a heavier classification — and they are counted separately for the same reason.
  • One collection, one invoice — no second supplier for the spa side.
  • Hotel spas are a normal account — and the hotel laundry page covers how the rooms side is priced.

Rewashing Alfold linen is the real environmental cost

Most of the environmental cost of gym towelling is rewashing and replacing it. Getting the classification right the first time does more than any claim on a van.

  • The GU6 round is a shared journey rather than a separate trip to Alfold.
  • Towelling washed without softener keeps absorbing, so it is replaced on wear rather than on feel.
  • Hire stock is rotated through its full life rather than binned when it greys.
