Read the care label first. A washtub, with or without dots, is fine for the bag. A tub with a hand in it, or one crossed through, should stay out. For a Festival City wardrobe, the bag suits:

Care labels show the heat a fabric can take as dots inside the iron symbol. A single dot is the lowest heat, about 110°C, for acrylic and some other synthetics. Two dots allow about 150°C, right for silk, wool and polyester blends. Cotton and linen take three dots, about 200°C. If the iron is crossed out, the fabric takes steam or no heat.

• Steam only on dark crepe: heavy pressure can leave it shiny, so abayas and dark suit trousers are steamed, never pressed flat.

• Comforter: quilted in squares, often with a patterned top, and used with no cover. Squares dry at different rates, so each row is felt by hand before the comforter is done.
• Blanket: AED 26 for a standard size, with a separate price for larger ones.
• Bedcover: AED 29. It sits on top of the bed, so it gathers the most dust, including fine sand that blows in on windy days. Mention any tassels or beads.

Seam torn or filling escaping? Send a photo before pickup and we will agree a safe way to wash it.

Through a Dubai Festival City summer, pillows and protectors get swapped more than the rest of the bed, so they tire first.

• Pillows: AED 19 each. A wash and a slow dry bring most pillows back to life. If a pillow stays flat and lumpy even after shaking, it is time to replace it. Memory foam is not accepted.
• Sheets: AED 25, flat or fitted. Run a hand along the elastic of fitted sheets and remove hair clips and earring backs.
• Pillowcases: AED 9. Night cream and hair oil show up fast, so tell us in the chat. Rubbing soap in first does more harm than good.
• Mattress protectors: AED 35. Plastic backing can crack in heat, so photograph the label for us.

Detergent trapped in the loops stiffens towels, so each one gets an extra rinse before it dries. Towels cost AED 7 and robes AED 19.

• Beach towels: shake them out well first, since sand holds water in the pile.
• Robes: the thick collar stays damp longest, so it is the last thing checked before folding. Include the belt.
• Bath mats: cotton ones are fine. Hold back any whose rubber backing is breaking up.
• Sofa covers: AED 46 for a standard cover that zips off. Take a photo of the sofa before unzipping, so every cover goes back on its own cushion.
• Tablecloths: AED 19. If a spill landed on one, let it dry and tell us what caused it.

Keep wet towels away from duvets, as humid air spreads damp into filling quickly.

A few things should stay out of every washing machine, ours too:

• Blankets with heating or wiring built in.
• Pillows and toppers made of memory foam.
• Blankets filled with weights or beads.
• Any item whose label shows a crossed-out washtub. If in doubt, send a photo on WhatsApp and we will reply before pickup.
